At the edge of the historical centre of Amsterdam, in the former horse stables of the Amstel brewery, up architecture has designed a distinctive home for internationally operating AI company Rewire. The monumental building, located in a beautiful spot on the Mauritskade, bordering the historic centre of Amsterdam and the Oosterpark. The stables are situated at the end of a cul-de-sac. The building enjoys the best of both worlds; the dynamic energy of the city is felt at the front of the building, while the back opens up to the tranquillity and generous greenery of the Oosterpark. Within this unique and diverse setting and with respect for the monumental character of the building, up architecture drastically changed the casco structure to give space to a 2.500m2 innovative and inspiring place to work, learn, connect and collaborate. Due to its use as housing, creative studio and artist gallery, time has stood still for decades; even the scars of the previous life of the stables have been preserved. The ground floor formerly hosted the stables for the horses that pulled large beer wagons through Amsterdam. These beautiful spaces have a height of nearly 5 meters and consist of heavy masonry walls and distinctive cast-iron columns that support the concrete floor of the upper levels. The large entrance doors of the stables led to the square in front of the building. On either side of the stables the former service quarters of the stable manager and other support spaces were situated. On the first floor, the hayloft was to be found. This space was once used for storing hay and oats for the horses. Composed wooden columns carry the high wooden roof which gives the space an even more distinctive character compared to the ground floor. To accommodate the new function as headquarters for Rewire, the monumental shell has been thoroughly restored and transformed to be more sustainable. The starting point for the renovation was to create a Paris Proof building that meets the demands of our time and reach the ambitions of the client at the same time. up architecture has emphasized the contrast between the monumental building and Rewire's forward-looking character to create an interior where the tension between history and future is tangible. In a subtle manner, the user is continually prompted with the question ‘what is real’? In collaboration with the Spanish architecture firm Cruz y Ortiz, up architecture proposed adjustments to the building's exterior shell. Generous new openings in the front and rear facades and large skylights in the wooden roofs bring daylight deep into the building. To break through the highly compartmentalized structure and connect all spaces both horizontally and vertically, up architecture proposed a large central void opposite the main entrance. This allows the new roof lights to brighten up the green heart of the building and provide space for a new T-shaped staircase visually and physically connecting the ground floor to the upper floors / former stables to the haylofts. The size of the large facade openings is reflected in the new portals in the division walls that naturally connect the different spaces with the new heart of the building and the organisation.
